Do you get energy from improving our sanding robot CASSy? As an Automated Cobot Camera Positioning Intern at SPECTO Aerospace, you will directly contribute to the development of our production tools.

Job description

Internship | Bachelor level | SPECTO Aerospace | Amsterdam Lelystad Airport

At SPECTO Aerospace, a certified aviation engineering company located at Lelystad Airport and at the air force base in Woensdrecht, we repair high-quality composite parts for the international aviation and defense industry. With a team of approximately 50 colleagues, we are working hard on our future. Everything revolves around ingenuity, innovation and quality for us, which is why we, as a maintenance company, take technological steps that go beyond the requirements within the aviation industry. We are proud of our profession and are all passionate about the business. Together we strive for the best result and help each other where necessary. We have an open and family atmosphere, where our core values are focused on people.

We have developed a sanding robot CASSy (Cobot Automated Sanding System) ourselves that can automatically sand aircraft noses (Radomes). We write the software for this and we test the system in our own workshops on real aircraft parts so that we can immediately see the result of what we come up with. We are not a software company pur sang but an aviation repair company. That is why we are looking for help from IT people.

The Case

CASSy's spatial coordination is currently set manually by physically placing points of the sanding path on the surface of the RADOME and positioning the camera by means of trial and error. This process is called the 'Scan Setup'. This determines from which positions (the so-called scan points) the camera must look at the surface and where the various path points are then located in the image. With this information, it can be determined during the sanding process which points must be switched on or off (GO/NO-GO).

The Assignment

We would like to perform this process digitally so that time and resources can be saved. This can be done by creating a digital model of the camera and calculating which points are in the image, given a location of the camera relative to the RADOME. This should make it possible to replace the physical setting process with a digital variant. This digital variant can then be further automated: By means of a certain logic, the computer can determine where the scan points should be placed. As a result, no more time needs to be spent on this part for generating new programs for CASSy. This logic can possibly also be used to dynamically (during the sanding process itself) determine the location of the scan points, based on which path points have not yet been switched off. This also results in a significant time saving during the sanding process.

The Deliverables

  • Digital image simulation of the camera:

    - Demonstrably tested for accuracy

    - Calibration process must be reproducible for the future

  • Software function that can locate path points in the virtual image of the camera for a given position

  • Process logic to automatically determine from which positions the camera should look, given an arbitrary collection of path points

  • Report containing:

    - Reproducibility of digital camera model

    - Neat explanation of the written software

    - Substantiation of the process logic

    - Recommendations for further research and development

What do we offer?

  • A workplace in our R&D office with young colleagues

  • Professional guidance and sparring partner with experience and knowledge of related systems.

  • Company laptop with which you can carry out the assignment

  • A good internship allowance

  • Gain experience in an aerospace engineering company
