Are you helping to shape the future of robotic sanding?

SPECTO Aerospace is developing CASSy, a sanding robot for radomes. You will contribute to a visual detection system for good results.

Job description

Internship 3rd/4th year | Bachelor | SPECTO Aerospace | Amsterdam Lelystad Airport | Mechtronica | Software Engineering | Robotica | Vision Systems |

Will you help shape the future of robotic sanding in aviation? SPECTO Aerospace is developing CASSy, an advanced sanding robot for aircraft noses (Radomes). You will contribute to a crucial step: a visual detection system that prevents damage to composite material and ensures flawless results.

At SPECTO Aerospace, a certified aerospace engineering company located at Lelystad Airport and the air force base in Woensdrecht, we repair high-quality composite parts for the international aviation and defense industry. With a team of approximately 50 colleagues, we are working hard on our future. Everything we do revolves around ingenuity, innovation and quality, which is why we, as a maintenance company, are taking technological steps that go beyond the requirements within the aviation industry. We are proud of our profession and are all passionate about the business. Together we strive for the best result and help each other where necessary. We have an open and familiar atmosphere, where our core values are focused on people.

The Case

SPECTO is in fact a craft company in a high-tech environment (www.spectoaerospace.com). As part of our digitalization and automation trajectory, we have developed CASSy (Cobot Automated Sanding System) for sanding aircraft noses (Radomes). Automated sanding of aerospace components is a significant challenge when working with parts containing composite materials, as unintentional sanding of these areas can cause critical damage and require costly rework. The core problem that this project addresses is the lack of a reliable visual detection system that can identify the presence of composite material in real time during the automated sanding process.

The Assignment

The aim is to use CASSy to completely remove coatings from an aircraft nose without damaging the underlying composite material. Your main responsibility will be to research and develop a visual detection system to accurately identify composite areas (with fiber patterns) during automated sanding. Enable CASSy to avoid composite areas, significantly increasing the scope of automation and product safety and saving production time.

The Deliverables

  • The aim is for the system to eventually be able to decoat an aircraft nose (Radome) completely autonomously, without damage

  • A proposed system design or architecture for integrating the chosen detection technology with the automatic sanding device

  • Analysis and recommendations for reducing the impact of environmental factors (dust, lighting) on the performance of the detection system

  • A proof-of-concept demonstration or simulation of the detection principle

What do we offer?

  • A workplace in our R&D office with young colleagues

  • Professional guidance and sparring partner with experience and knowledge of related systems

  • Company laptop with which you can carry out the assignment

  • A good internship allowance

  • Gain experience in an aerospace engineering company

Job requirements

What do we expect from you as an intern?

You are an enthusiastic team player who enjoys working with our Team at Lelystad Airport to come up with, research, build and test new solutions.

You are a 3rd or 4th year Bachelor student in one of the following directions:

  • Mechatronics (automation, robotics, integration of production systems)

  • Software Engineering (focus on machine vision, image processing, possibly AI/machine learning)

  • Industrial Automation & Robotics or similar

You have:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to independently investigate and evaluate technical options

  • Interest in automation, robotics and production challenges

  • Basic knowledge or strong interest in visual systems, sensors or image processing

  • An active approach, self-motivation and able to clearly document work

  • Good communication skills (Dutch and/or English) and good technical writing and documentation skills

The next step
