Will you help innovate precision aircraft finishing?

We are looking for an intern to help with technology development to detect and project striping and technical markings.

Job description

Internship 3rd/4th year | Hbo | SPECTO Aerospace | Amsterdam Lelystad Airport | Mechtronics | Industrial Automation | Aerospace |

Are you ready to innovate the precision of aircraft finishing? SPECTO Aerospace is looking for a driven and curious intern to help us develop a technology to accurately detect and project striping and technical markings on aircraft parts. A unique opportunity to apply your knowledge in a high-tech aviation environment.

At SPECTO Aerospace, a certified aerospace engineering company located at Lelystad Airport and at the air base in Woensdrecht, we repair high-quality composite parts for the international aviation and defense industry. With a team of approximately 50 colleagues, we are working hard on our future. Everything revolves around ingenuity, innovation and quality, which is why we, as a maintenance company, take technological steps that go beyond the requirements within the aviation industry. We are proud of our profession and are all passionate about the business. Together we go for the best result and help each other where necessary. We have an open and familiar atmosphere, where our core values are focused on people.

The Case

In order to repair aircraft components, it is usually necessary to remove the coatings. These coatings are also used to apply striping or livery (attractive lines on the fuselage) or mandatory technical markings. Measuring, positioning and making templates of the markings that need to be applied accurately is a time-consuming job that can sometimes go wrong. In order to save time and be accurate, we are looking for other methods for (re)positioning and applying both striping and technical markings.

The Assignment

The core of this project will consist of investigating and evaluating different technological approaches for both the initial scanning/detection of the existing livery or technical markings and the subsequent projection of that data. After all, this has to be applied back to the component after repair. A key technical challenge will be to establish and use reliable reference points on the component surface to ensure accurate spatial correlation between the scanned data and the projected image, which is crucial for achieving high precision in masking and coating.

The Deliverables

  • A comparative analysis and evaluation report on potential scanning/detection technologies for capturing livery data on 3D surfaces

  • comparative analysis and evaluation report on potential projection technologies suitable for accurately displaying masking on component surfaces. Focus is on both hardware and software

  • A proposed system architecture that integrates the chosen detection and projection methods, including a strategy for using reference points for alignment

  • Documentation describing the research process, technical findings and final system recommendations

  • A demonstration or simulation that proves striping detection and projection as a proof of concept

What do we offer?

  • A workplace in our R&D office with young colleagues

  • Professional guidance and sparring partner with experience and knowledge of related systems

  • Company laptop with which you can carry out the assignment

  • A good internship allowance

  • Gain experience in an aerospace engineering company

Job requirements

What do we expect from you as an intern?

You are an enthusiastic team player who enjoys working with our Team at Lelystad Airport to come up with, research, build and test new solutions.

You are a 3rd or 4th year HBO student in one of the following fields:

  • Electrical Engineering (focus on imaging, sensors, optics)

  • Computer Engineering / Informatics (focus on computer vision, image processing, 3D data, algorithms)

  • Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics / Aerospace Engineering (focus on robotics, automation systems, precision mechanics, production processes)

  • Physics / Optical Engineering (focus on optics, projection systems, light interaction)

You have:

  • A proactive, investigative attitude, strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to conduct thorough technical research and compare different technologies

  • Interest in optics, imaging systems and possibly 3D scanning/projection

  • Detail-oriented approach to ensure high accuracy in measurements and projections

  • Adaptability to address challenges related to complex geometries and alignment

  • Good communication skills (Dutch and/or English) and good technical writing and documentation skills

The next step

Are you enthusiastic about the Striping Detection & Projection internship assignment and do you want to be part of our team? Then apply directly via the application button! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tijmen Koelewijn (Recruitment & HR Manager) via jobs@spectoaerospace.com or call +31 6 1328 5298. He will be happy to guide you through the application process and answer any questions you may have.

Dear agencies, We primarily recruit interns and graduates ourselves and do not use external parties. So there is no point in contacting us for this!
